Every Business Needs an Angel

Every Business Needs an Angel

From Booklist by David Rouse

"Angel investor" is a relatively new term used to describe the nearly three million individuals in the U.S. who have poured more than $60 billion of their own money into financing start-up businesses. Typically such an investor will put anywhere from $100,000 to $1 million into a promising company. Because traditional venture capital firms focus on later-stage development, the angel investor is vital to fledgling and would-be entrepreneurs. The challenge for investors and those seeking funding has been in finding appropriate matchups. Consequently, May and Simmons formed the Dinner Club, an "angel club" that serves as a model for structured angel-group investing. They explain how such clubs work, taking readers "inside" one of the Dinner Club's monthly meetings. They suggest ways for entrepreneurs to pitch their ideas, advise how to structure a business plan, profile who angels are, and offer checklists of information prospective angels will require. May and Simmons also emphasize the personal nature of the relationships that are formed, advising that angels frequently have expertise in addition to money to contribute. About Cal

Cal Simmons is one of the most trusted and recognized experts in the travel industry. In 1976, Cal founded Cal Simmons Travel, which became one of the top travel agencies in the country. He is a frequent speaker at industry events, and has served on the boards of several airlines, hotel companies and a rental car agency. Cal is also the co-founder and manager of three early-stage venture funds and in 2001, he co-authored the widely acclaimed investment guide, Every Business Needs an Angel, published by Random House. In 2002, he was appointed Chairman of the Virginia Tourism Corporation by the Governor of Virginia, and in that same year, published his first online travel guide, The Informed Traveler, which now reaches over 80,000 subscribers. Continuing his successes, he launched Five Star Alliance (FSA), an online agency featuring the world’s great hotels, in 2004. Recently, Cal launched www.SimmonsHotelGuides.com, a city by city collection of blogs featuring the world’s best hotels. Cal also publishes www.TravelOnion.com, which offers consumers the best travel deals, contests, and blogs all in one place.

Investments

I focus on early stage investments primarily located in the Washington, DC Metro area. I sometimes invest as an individual or occasionally lead rounds where I syndicate the deal with other investors. I limit my activity to 3-5 new deals per year. I typically sit on the boards of my portfolio companies. Range of investment varies with the opportunity and stage of the company. Historically we have invested individually or as a group between 50k-1million in first rounds. I tend to co invest with other experienced angels or early stage venture funds. My goal is an accelerated exit for both investors and entrepreneurs. I take a portfolio approach to investing trying to equally divide my interests between the following:

  1. Venture returns of 3-5 times in 3-5 years.
  2. More mature businesses with cash flow predictability (ie. Five Guys Franchises) (Potentially held for long term).
  3. Swing for the fences. Companies that show potential for 10x returns. Higher risk – higher reward.
